How does website pinging work?
A ping is a small notification that tells ping services, over the XML-RPC protocol, that a page has been updated. Those services pass it on to their own directories and downstream aggregators, improving the chance that the address is discovered.
- 1 URL validation — The address is normalised; only http/https addresses on ports 80 and 443 are accepted. Local network and private IP addresses are rejected.
- 2 Parallel ping dispatch — An XML-RPC request goes to every verified service at once. Where a service redirects, the request follows the redirect and keeps its body.
- 3 Response evaluation — The HTTP code alone is not enough: a service that rejects a ping still returns 200 and reports the error in the flerror field of the response body. Both signals are read together.
What pinging does not do
Pinging is not a ranking factor and does not guarantee indexing. What actually determines whether your page enters Google is content originality, internal linking, your sitemap and robots configuration, and server accessibility. A ping does not replace any of these; it is a supporting signal that may speed up discovery.
When should you ping?
When you publish a new post or make a meaningful update to an existing page. Pinging an unchanged address repeatedly provides no benefit; services rate-limit the request and you will see "Failed" in the result table.
